Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister of Britain, a country in battle. He said "The only thing that really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril." Churchill felt to manage the strategy around the Atlantic shipping routes was the most challeng8ing part of the war.
"It was sheer unmitigated Hell (being in a storm). Even getting food from the galley (kitchen) to the forecastle (at the front of the ship) was a tremendous job. The mess-decks were usually a shambles and the wear and tear on the bodies and tempers was something I shall never forget."
Said an officer on the "New Westminster", a convoy ship for the British.
Admiral Donitz was born in Berlin, Germany on Sept. 16 1891 and died Dec. 24, 1980. He was in office from April 30, 1945 to May 2, 1945. He was captain of the first U-boat the flotilla weddigen. On January 28, 1939 he was promoted commodore or commander of the submarines. October 1, 1939, he was promoted rear admiral and on September 1, 1940 he became vice admiral. By the end of 1942, the production of type Vll-U boats had increased to the point where Dontiz was finally able to conduct mass attacks by groups of submarines, a tactic he called "Rudel". On January 30, 1943 Donitz replaced Erich Raeder as commander-in-chief of the navy and grand admiral.
