The Battle of the Atlantic started on September 3, 1939 and ended May 23, 1943. It took place right after Britain escaped from Dunkirk and The Battle of Britain. It occurred in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. The German U-Boats would primarily attack in the middle of the ocean because there would be protection near the land of America and Britain.
Even though British had the largest fleet in the world with 3000 vessels and 160,000 men, many British Ships were sunk by German U-Boats:
1939 : 222 ships sunk (114 by submarine)
1940 : 1059 ships sunk (471 by submarine)
1941 : 1328 ships sunk (432 by submarine)
1942 : 1661 ships sunk (1159 by submarine)
1943 : 597 ships sunk (463 by submarine)
If Germany had prevented the British Ships from carry equipment from America to Britain, the outcome of the war would have been significantly different. The Battle of the Atlantic was one the most important battles in World War Two. over 30,000 sea men were lost.
